Mannion

WESTMORELAND, N.Y.- On Friday, October 4, 2024, Patrick Mannion, a member for the New York State Board of Regents visited the Westmoreland Central School District.

Patrick Mannion along with school Superintendent Rocco Migliori, Director of Curriculum Steve Polera, Board of Education President John Acee and Dr. Patricia Kilburn, Superintendent for Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES toured the campus. Mannion’s purpose for the visit was to learn more about what’s happening in rural schools with a focus on Computer Science and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). Mannion observed our Multiage classroom to see the work our teachers and students do with play based centers, SEL and individualized learning. Then he went across the hall to our kindergarten teacher, Mrs. McCormick’s class, to see what those students are doing each day and to learn more about our “Switcheroo” process. Our Primary also added a new Health and Wellness time/fast fitness with the Health and Wellness coordinator, Kory Lewandrowski. We truly believe physical activity each day leads to better health mentally, emotionally and physically. It also improves socialization skills, so Mr. Mannion got to see how we are addressing these topics as well.

In the high school, he saw how we are expanding our writing skills beyond English class. He stopped by our Distance Learning Center so see how students are taking their writing skills into science, math and gym classes. These are just a few classes, but Mrs. Macrina explained how she recently went to one of the science classes to help the students write conclusions for their labs. She also mentioned some time she spent in a math class earlier that week. She showed him a computer program the school district has that allows students to see their progression from 7th to 12th grade.

Patrick Mannion was elected to the Board of Regents in March 2024 and will serve a three-year term representing the Fifth Judicial District. He has an extensive business background serving as chair of the Crouse Health System and is currently on the board for a newly formed non-profit digital media publication called, Central Current. Previously, he served as the former chair of CenterState CEO, a business leadership and economic development organization based out of Syracuse, and the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority.

We were so honored to have Mr. Mannion on our campus. Thank you for visiting!
