December 11, 2018
Dear Parent/Guardian:
The purpose of this letter is to inform you of an incident on a school bus involving a BB gun.
On Monday, December 10, 2018, on school bus #134, an elementary student displayed a BB gun as students were being transported home at the end of the school day.
Please know that based on an investigation by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, the BB gun was not loaded or discharged at the time of the incident. There were no injuries.
Our protocol is to inform parents/guardians about incidents such as this one as soon as possible. However, due to the incident not being reported by students to the bus driver, as well as the need to conduct an initial investigation and not being briefed by law enforcement about the incident until late Monday evening, well after the end of the school day, immediate notification was not possible.
The investigation is ongoing, both by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and school district. Once completed, the school district will take appropriate action. Due to being a minor, the student who displayed the BB gun will not be identified.
As always, the safety of our students is a top priority and something that we take very seriously. We will continue to do everything possible to keep our students safe. If your child is experiencing any concerns about the incident, please encourage him/her to speak to a teacher, counselor or school administration.
Sincerely,
Rocco Migliori
Superintendent of Schools
