The Westmoreland/Oriskany Girls U-10 AYSO team stole the show - - at least for a little bit - - at the Utica City Football Club game on January 6.
In front of a sold-out crowd, the team took the field during halftime of the Utica versus Milwaukee Wave MASL (Major Arena Soccer League) contest at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
Westmoreland/Oriskany squared off against the Clinton U-10 team in a brief scrimmage.
In addition to playing in front of 3,000-plus fans, each Westmoreland/Oriskany player walked out, hand-in-hand, with a Utica City Football Club player for introductions and the National Anthem.
Jill Downs, a Kindergarten teacher at Westmoreland Primary Elementary School, has a daughter on the Westmoreland/Oriskany team.
“Watching the kids walk out with the Utica City Football Club players was an amazing sight to see,” Downs said. “Having a professional soccer club so close to us will, hopefully, increase interest in soccer in our area. The players and their families were all smiles and so grateful for the opportunity.”
The Westmoreland/Oriskany Girls U-10 AYSO team is coached by Kara Young. The Westmoreland/Oriskany and Clinton players were able to attend the Utica City Football Club game for free.
