Students ages six and younger, along with their families, enjoyed a fun night of reading at the Primary Elementary School on March 19.

The school held a “Literacy Night” in the library and cafeteria. The theme was, “Be a Reading Hero.”  Parent doing flash cards with child

At the event, students and their families read stories, made crafts, did finger plays and sang along with performer and guitarist, Jim McCarthy. Teachers also talked to parents about the importance of beginning to read to their children early and how to best support reading at home.

“We gave them some ideas for ways to create an atmosphere of reading in their homes. If children connect books to someone they love, they just might love reading,” Mrs. O’Connell, Primary Elementary School principal, said. “In the future, we’re hoping to have more events to help us connect with families of young children. We want to work as partners with families early on.”

“Literacy Night” was co-sponsored by the Westmoreland PTO and Small Blessings Preschool. Miss Lisa, Mrs. Bova, Mrs. Chesebro and Mrs. Downs all volunteered at the event, along with RTI Specialist, Mrs. Scoones.

Thank you to everyone who attended!
