Senior Alexis Flack is a big sports fan. Her dream is to eventually work for a professional sports franchise.

Part of that dream is already coming true.  Alexis with Comets mascot

Flack is currently an intern with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Utica Comets. The internship, made possible through the Jr./Sr. High School College & Career Enrichment Program, started at the beginning of the Comets’ season last October, and runs through the end of the season.

As part of her internship, Flack works closely with Utica Comets Vice President Adam Pawlick and his team and attends Comets home games. From being the guide for the Comets’ mascot, Naudie, to interacting with fans, the opportunity has given her a much better understanding of what it takes to run a professional sports team – or all of the “behind the scenes” work that must happen for the Comets to hit the ice and put on a show for fans.

“It’s so much more than just a game,” Flack explained. “Before a home game starts, I’m involved in the preparations for that night including everything from entertainment to promotions.”

While Flack says she enjoys working with Naudie and being around fans the most, she has learned so much about the “business” side of a professional sports team. She also says she has improved many important workplace skills and become a stronger believer in her abilities.

“I’m naturally reserved, but the experience has made me a better communicator and made me feel more confident in a work setting,” Flack said. “It has helped me network and make connections with so many people.”

“Alexis is a wonderful, respectful young lady, and the internship has helped her blossom and has allowed her great personality to shine through,” Mrs. Weissenberger, Jr./Sr. High School business teacher and College & Career Enrichment Program coordinator, added. “From September until now, I’ve witnessed her gain so much confidence that will help her achieve her goals.”

Flack is attending Mohawk Valley Community College in the fall and, after two years, plans to transfer to Syracuse University to major in sports management. Her ultimate goal is to work in the front office for a professional sports franchise as a scout or even general manager.

“I’m so grateful for the College & Career Enrichment Program,” Flack said. “It has helped me determine the sports industry is for me. I may even minor in law now.”

Keep a look out for Alexis at Utica Comets home games. She’s one of many Westmoreland seniors on a path for success!
